Greenpeace commissions new 'green' ship

Greenpeace has signed a contract with Germany's Fassmer shipyard for the construction of a vessel featuring the latest green technology. The Rainbow Warrior III will run mainly on wind energy with the option to switch over to engine-powered, diesel-electric propulsion.
The new ship, to be finished in 2011 for Greenpeace's 40th anniversary, will also use eco-friendly technologies to reduce fuel consumption while heat created by the generators will be re-used to heat water and to pre-heat the engine.
The A-frame design of the mast and the sails' positioning has been optimized for the highest efficiency, and the shape of the hull will create less drag against wind and water currents for maximum fuel conservation.
