The Cellulosic Biofuels Network (CBN), a new government-funded research organization in Canada, is making it easier for the nation’s farmers to access new market opportunities and to achieve better pricing for crops, according to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. CBN will receive $19.9 million in funding to support its offerings of new technologies, expertise and processes that increase the efficiency and reduce the economic costs tied to cellulosic ethanol production, with particular emphasis on the agricultural biomass sector. The funds will be coming via the Agricultural Bioproducts Innovation Program and the research conducted by CBN will allow the manufacturing of biofuels from agricultural waste – giving farmers a foothold in the energy sector.
"Our government wants to advance agricultural research that will help create economic development opportunities and deliver concrete results for our farmers,” Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of National Revenue and Minister of State, said this week. "This major research will not only help advance our cellulosic ethanol production, but will also help our farmers increase their income by producing new crop varieties designed specifically for the energy market."
