In an effort to maintain healthy water supplies, Ventura Water turns to technology and innovations in efficiency in this month's Energy Digital.

Ventura Water has been delivering drinking water from local sources since 1923, treating wastewater for more than a century and preventing storm water pollution for the past two decades. As a means to spread awareness of the importance of one of the world's most precious resources, Ventura Water connects with its customers through face-to-face interactions as well as its growing presence on Facebook, Twitter, a YouTube channel and an online newsletter with a current distribution of about 3,000 people.
“Strategically, we're trying to create a relationship with our customers to ensure longevity,” says Shana Epstein, the General Manager at Ventura Water. “By that, I don't mean the longevity of a government-run monopoly, but the longevity of the resources we're providing.”
Sustainability and environmental stewardship are central to all of Ventura's operations from the promotion of the reuse of treated water to energy efficiencies at an operational level. Incentive programs are also provided to customers in an effort to encourage low water using appliances like toilets and washers.
Moving forward, Ventura Water will be focused on having recycled water become something that people adopt and accept in addition to building that infrastructure in an already built-out town that's been around since the turn of the century. Earning the acceptance of the “purple pipe” will be instrumental in building a viable solution to supplant current and future demands.
