SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - April 2, 2012) - In a report in Business Review USA, residents of the City of Stockton see a huge benefit from the Municipal Utilities Department's (MUD's) overhaul in water infrastructure.
With existing wells, a new service water treatment plant and purchased treated water, MUD acts as a diversified retail entity with customers paying rates based on the expenses that meet the utility's budget.
In the 1970s, MUD combined a number of small urban wastewater treatment facilities into a regional plant, which boasts a current capacity of 55 million gallons a day. Unique to wastewater treatment, the facility incorporates about 690 acres of ponds, including about 140 acres of wetlands to serve the greater area of Stockton. Keeping up on infrastructure, the facility and other storm water programs are under a major overhaul for a number of necessary upgrades.
Maintaining and improving old infrastructure along with pursuing new treatment facilities are central to MUD's operations today. Having embarked on a new endeavor to supply and treat its own water, MUD has increased water security to an area that had previously relied on groundwater or purchased water.
MUD is already ahead of recently passed laws in California requiring a 20 percent reduction in water consumption by 2020. Apparently, MUD's public outreach and water conservation programs are faring well.
