Caterpillar Inc., the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and dieselelectric locomotives, announced Monday, January 10, 2011,that it will be opening its first production facility in Thailand. The facility will primarily produce underground trucks and loaders for hard-rock underground mining operations.

The decision comes in response to Brazil and Australia’s booming mining sectors’ demand for more equipment. Demand for copper, coal and iron ore in particular has been on the rise in recent months and Caterpillar is ensuring that they maintain their position as industry leader. “We continue to make strategic investments in our mining business to support our customers,” said Chris Curfman, President of Caterpillar Global Mining and a Caterpillar Inc. Vice President.

The planned facility will be located at the Hemaraj Rayong Industrial Facility in Rayong Province and will cover 60,000 square meters (645,000 square feet) and is expected to employ approximately 800 people.

“The on-going infrastructure development plans for the world’s growth markets combined with a long-term trend toward urbanization and growing wealth in emerging economies should continue to help drive long-term demand for commodities,” said Steve Wunning, Caterpillar group president with responsibility for Resource Industries. “This facility will help to position Caterpillar for continued leadership in the mining industry.”

Caterpillar believes it is helping to make “sustainable progress possible and driving positive change on every continent,” and it is no stranger to Asia-based production with facilities already located in India, Indonesia, China, and Singapore. The company plans to break ground in 2011, jumpstarting production by late 2012.
