The ‘Blest' machine—produced and distributed by Japanese Blest Company—is the brainchild of inventor Akinori Ito, and may resolve not only the world’s diminishing fossil fuels problem, but also reduce plastic waste pollution. The Blest machine, quite simply, converts plastic back into oil. The machine melts the plastic in an airtight chamber until the plastic liquefies and ultimately boils to release gases. The gases are diverted via tube into a tank of ordinary tap water, where it cools and condenses into crude oil. The oil is combustible as is, but can be refined into diesel, gasoline, or kerosene.
The Blest machine is a portable unit that sits easily on a countertop or table. It has been designed to be used at home, and could offer individuals and families energy independence. Imagine, instead of putting your recycling bin on the curb for pick up once a week, you simply put the plastic refuse in your Blest machine and create your own oil! The machine currently has a price tag of about $10,000 dollars, but as oil prices continue to rise, the investment may be worthwhile, and as the machine becomes more popular, prices are bound to come down.

The Blest machine is currently capable of converting polyethylene, polystyrene and polypropylene (numbers 2-4) into oil. However, it still cannot convert PET bottles (number 1) back into oil just yet. Concerns over the release of various toxins in the conversion process have been expressed by some, but the Blest machine—still in its infancy—is bound to have a huge impact on reducing plastic waste as well as oil dependency. Plus, if the technology were applied on a large-scale, oil companies could find themselves mining old landfills for plastics instead of drilling the seafloor for oil.
