Results have been released on the Parkson 304 HiOx® UltraFlex aeration panels that were installed on a wastewater treatment facility earlier in 2010. The plant is situated in Hidalgo, Mexico, which is 40 miles northwest of Mexico City. The wastewater cleaned from the facility is used by a regional power generation station, in addition to a local refinery. The existing wastewater plant as it was, no longer produced the necessary amount of water for the specific industrial applications.

The activated sludge treatment plant was initially developed to provide 700 LPS (16 MGD) of treated water. However, water production has been as low as 250 LPS (5.7 MGD), and is not capable of producing the volume required to cool the thermo-electrical towers.

The HiOx® installed has more than doubled the plant’s consistent delivery to 500 LPS (11.4 MGD) and peak flows of 600 LPS (13.7 MGD), which is a 140 percent increase. The increased water production means the power generation end user will be able to rely heavily on recycled wastewater, rather than the scarce freshwater.

“The Hidalgo installation has far exceeded the customer’s expectations. They have reduced the horsepower requirement from 900hp to 700hp and often run the plant with only a single 350hp centrifugal blower while still meeting the required oxygen requirements. In addition to more than doubling the plant’s capacity, the HiOx® UltraFlex system has resulted in monthly savings between $15,000 and $40,000,” stated Vipin Lillaney, Parkson’s HiOx® Product Manager.

The plant has reached a higher treatment efficacy with a 96 percent reduction in BOD. Additionally, the plant has seen a 46 percent reduction in energy use, due to reduced power consumption.

Parkson also delivered two Aqua Guard screens with 6mm openings for the protection of the plant’s operations and improved panel lifespan.
