Natural gas is an abundant source of energy that typically involves be drilled out of the ground; however, there has been a rise in the popularity of using biogas—the gas naturally given off by biological organisms—to serve the same function of energy generation to power and heat homes. Xebec Absorption Inc., “a global leader of clean energy solutions to corporations and governments looking to reduce their carbon footprint,” has opened a biogas treatment facility in southern California to cleanse the biogas emitted from sewage waste at a wastewater treatment facility in Escondido, CA.

Of the roughly 16,000 wastewater treatment facilities in the United States, approximately 540 have been identified as sufficient for biogas reclamation. Only two other U.S. facilities currently operate to cleanse biogas in a similar way as the Xebec facility. "Our revolutionary kinetic pressure swing adsorption technology enables us to remove nitrogen and oxygen in a single process step, while at the same time separating carbon dioxide and water," said Xebec President and CEO, Kurt Sorschak.

The cleansing process is needed to adhere to federal and state laws governing natural gas quality standards for clean emissions. The new facility will produce biogas that will meet these standards and, following a one-year testing window, the gas will potentially be fed into Southern California Gas Company’s existing natural gas pipeline infrastructure. The facility will provide enough natural gas to serve the power needs of 1,200 local homes.

The idea of converting waste-to-energy is a hot topic in the energy world right now, and new innovation seems to be popping up all over the world. Now, using our own sewage to create clean energy, Xebec is jumpstarting what could be a domino effect in the United States, and it would be no shock to see more and more wastewater treatment facilities begin to collect and redistribute their biogas emissions. Fracking methods employed to traditionally reach underground natural gas reserves have proven on several occasions to be hazardous to groundwater tables and the surrounding environment. Biogas may be the true route to a cleaner greener natural gas energy future.
